The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that there was no loss of election materials or life from the boat mishap that happened within Ilaje Local Government Area on Friday night.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo State, Mr Rufus Akeju, stated this to journalists on Saturday in Akure, NAN reports.
“INEC can confirm that there was an accident last night during the movement of personnel and materials to the Registration Areas of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State for today’s governorship election.
“Fortunately, all personnel and election materials were rescued when the boat capsized.”
Akeju said that the rescuing was done by the officers and personnel of the Nigerian Navy.
According to him, the movement was eventually concluded, and voting commenced as planned in all the polling units today.
He also applauded the resilience and professionalism of the Nigerian Navy as well as other personnel involved in the exercise.
Reporters At Large had earlier reported that a boat transporting electoral materials and some ad-hoc staffs of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the riverine Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State has capsized in transit.
According to witnesses, there were no casualties in the incident as the men of the Nigeria Navy rescued all the victims and the election materials.
